Our first classes of new sixth graders visited the garden today with their math and science teacher. At this time of year, the corn, amaranth, sunflowers, and scarlet runner beans curling their way up impossibly tall teepees may overwhelm a newcomer to the garden. To allow sixth graders to get to know the space before beginning their work, we have designed a card hike as an alternative to a conventional tour. Students independently follow a path of descriptive cards that highlight various aspects of the garden and kitchen, so each can observe the space in solitude and at his or her own pace.
For Edible Schoolyard staff members, the card hike is an opportunity to renew our own wonder and curiosity as we watch a new crop of tiny students discover the garden for the first time. As we enter the fall semester, we hope to expand this journal so readers can come along for the journey and to offer a place for the many voices involved in our program to tell their stories. Stay tuned for yet another exciting school year here at King Middle School!
