Thank you for your interest in The Edible Schoolyard. We offer our program as a model for other organizations engaged in creating organic gardening and cooking projects for children. Although we are unable to join in formal partnerships with other projects, we are happy to assist in the following ways:

There is a wealth of resources available to new school gardens and to those interested in the national movement toward sustainable food systems – you’ll find some of them in our Resources and Links.

VISITORS GUIDELINES

We welcome visitors to The Edible Schoolyard. As The Edible Schoolyard is a nonprofit that is integrated into Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, we schedule visits well in advance, and during school hours. Drop-in visits are not permitted during school hours – however, the garden itself is open to the public on weekends and after school.

  How to schedule a visit
For individuals and groups of fewer than ten, monthly tours are offered during the first week of each month – please contact our office for the current schedule and to reserve a space.

Large groups (more than ten people) are scheduled on a case-by-case basis at least a month in advance – please contact us.

School field trips from Berkeley Unified School District preschools and elementaries are welcomed, given at least one month’s notice. We must request that school groups include one adult for every four children.

During your visit
Since your visit is arranged around the King Middle School class schedule, please be punctual. Visitors are also required to register with the Edible Schoolyard office and to wear a name tag for the duration of their time on the King Middle School campus.

During the one-hour tour, you will observe a garden and kitchen class in progress. Students and teachers will be fully occupied with classes, so the attention you receive will be from Edible Schoolyard tour guides. If you wish to meet with the garden or kitchen teachers, students, or staff, please request a separate appointment after your tour. In order to minimize distraction for our students, all questions must be addressed to your guides.

The classes you observe may be harvesting produce or preparing food – due to our limited resources, we cannot provide food, cuttings, or seeds to visitors, and ask that you refrain from sampling produce or food unless offered.

Photography of the kitchen and garden is allowed during your tour. Taking photographs of students is strictly prohibited.

GUIDELINES FOR THE MEDIA

Thank you for your interest in our program. If time allows, please attend one of our monthly tours as an introduction before requesting individual appointments or interviews. Please also review our Visitor Guidelines.

A request for your visit must be submitted at least three weeks in advance and should include the focus of your piece and background information on the publication for which it is destined. Proposed date and time, duration, and interview requests are also necessary.

NOTE: Photographs, video, and interviews of students are prohibited without proper authorization. Media must provide model release forms at least three weeks in advance.
