2009-2010 Organic Gardening Classes

Please join us for this hands-on series on the principles and practices of organic gardening in the Bay Area. Each session will incorporate working and learning, and provide ample opportunity for questions and dialogue. All classes are $25.00 and require online registration. 

Propagation for the Perennial Garden

Saturday, November 14th, 2009, 2:00pm-4:30pm

Learn how to grow perennial plants from seed, cuttings, division, and bulb propagation through working together in the autumn garden.
 

Backyard Mushroom Cultivation

Saturday, December 12th, 2009, 10:00am-12:30pm

This hands-on class, taught by ESY Garden Teacher Benjamin Eichorn, will focus on small-scale mushroom cultivation. We will cover the principles and practices of preparing the growing medium and inoculating with spawn. We will also discuss the cultivation of a number of different edible decomposer species, including oyster, portabella, and shiitake mushrooms. Each participant will go home with their very own mushroom cultivating kit to grow some of the delicious fungus on their own. This class will take place rain or shine.
 

Planting a Summer Flower Garden

Saturday, April 24th, 2010, 2:00pm-4:30pm

This class will illustrate a brief horticultural and historical review of flowers, sowing schedules, and the cultural requirements for growing Edible Schoolyard favorites, including Zinnias, Sunflowers, Columbine, and Siberian Iris. 
 

Staff

Wendy Johnson, author of Gardening at the Dragon’s Gate (Bantam, 2008), will lead the classes along with staff from the Edible Schoolyard. Ms. Johnson teaches organic gardening and meditation throughout the US.
